I'm heading out to LA next week for a conference, and I'll have some time to play on my first day. But instead of going to one of the other poker rooms I decided to play at Hollywood Park, since it's only 2 miles from my hotel. That way I have more time to play!

I am a limit player and play at stakes up to about 5/10 or 6/12. I also enjoy both Holdem and Omaha H/L. So with that in mind, is Hollywood Park a good place to play with bad players at those limits? If I'm going to end up at a table full of rocks I'd want to go somewhere else.

If you can find a table full of rocks in any LA cardroom, you'll have found the first one EVER!

All the LA card rooms are donkfests. Even if you don't like your table it's easy to get back on the list, just make sure you tell the desk that you don't want to go back to the same table.

I think "decent" is a good word to describe Hollywood Park. I've only been there once (along with once each to Commerce and Bike). The parking lot is well-lit but a little isolated -- I would pay the $2 or so and use valet parking.

The room itself is okay -- a large room and a little crowded, but not overly noisy. Players are very loose and very bad, and also pretty friendly (at least the tables I was at). Dealers were good, and with Shufflemasters in all the tables the play was very fast.

If you don't have a lot of time, it is well worth playing there since it is only a 5-minute drive versus 45 minutes or more to the other poker rooms.

If you're interested, I posted quick reviews of the 3 LA casinos I played at in my blog, link below.

So I got to play there on three nights, both 3/6 and 4/8 limit holdem. Wow, some of the players are so bad it defies the laws of physics. Some people were literally playing every hand, and calling down hoping for any kind of miracle. It was a sight to behold. It was weird how little people would buy-in for -- in a 4/8 game, some would only buy like $40, quickly go bust, and buy-in again.

I'm assuming this is normal for live play, whether it be L.A. or Vegas or A.C.? Let me tell you, I have gained a lot more respect for low-limit online players. 4/8 live is equivalent to like .25/.50 online in the caliber of play.

I don't play NL, but I noticed the game structure, and it was horrible! The highest buy-in game maxed at 40 BBs. The lowest one gave you a max buy-in of only 20 BBs!

And check this out. The casino was running a promotion where everyone who makes quads gets an entry to win a Hummer. But it's not "quads or better" -- a woman at my table made a royal flush and she didn't qualify!!

The problem with the LA poker rooms is that the rake on the low limit games will crush you. I went to HW, Hustler and Commerce. All three raked either $3 or $4 from EVERY pot if the BB was called. So a $7 pot ($1 SB, $3 BB and $3 call) immediately becomes only $3 or $4. Complete ripoff for low limit players.
