while playing the weekly poker league last night in my local i came across what i think was not even an arguement. 6 players left, blinds 700/1400, i was on button with AJ suited,all folded into me, i raised to 4500, a call from small blind and BB pushes all in for 5600, leaving 1100 more to call to me. I pushed all in to protect my hand but was told "i can only make up the 1100 and cant come over top as the bet is not double my initial raise" this caused uproar at the table,especially since the two who argued the point were not in the hand ! in the end the small blind agreed with me saying i can go all in and he folded. i went on to win versus A9. who was right?

The correct ruling would have been that you are not able to reraise as the BB's all in does count as a short raise. To reopen the action, an all-in raise must be equal or greater than your initial raise -- in this case 3100 chips (4500 - 1400).

He's right. You shouldn't have been allowed to raise for the reasons stated above. Sorry.
