Poker News Digest 6/20/2009 – 6/23/2009

  • In a first for the World Series of Poker, a bracelet winner shunned any sort of attention thrown his way.  After winning Friday’s Event 35, the $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha tournament, Indiana’s Richard Austin declined the traditional post-victory media interview.  On top of that (although not wholly unexpected given the interview refusal), he did not participate in the bracelet ceremony on Saturday.  Reactions in the poker community have been mixed.  Of course, the WSOP is not happy about it, and some players think Austin’s actions were “disrespectful.”  At the same time, however, many applaud Austin for doing his own thing, particularly when neither Harrah’s nor the WSOP sponsors add anything to the prize pool, thus absolving Austin from any obligation in many fans’ minds.  There is no official word on why Austin refused the interview and bracelet ceremony, but one report is that he may just be shy.

  • When the nomination period for the 2009 Poker Hall of Fame class was opened in May, PartyPoker went on the offensive, pushing for its poker ambassador, Mike Sexton, to be one of the inductees.  Now, PokerStars is doing the same for one of its own, Tom McEvoy.  McEvoy’s credentials are impressive.  He is a four-time WSOP bracelet winner, including one for the 1983 Main Event, and has 37 cashes at the WSOP.  He also won this year’s WSOP Champions Invitational, besting a field full of world champions and bracelet winners.  Aside from that win, McEvoy has not been too prominent on the tournament circuit in recent years, but his influence is felt daily through his poker teachings.  He has written a dozen poker books, including Championship Hold’em and How to Win No-Limit Hold’em Tournaments.  Poker fans have until July 2nd to visit the WSOP’s website and submit their nominations for the next class of the Poker Hall of Fame.

  • The Poker Players Alliance has organized “National Poker Week” for the week of July 19th through July 25th.  The primary goal of the week is to get the voice of the poker player heard on Capitol Hill.  Over 30 of the PPA’s state directors, as well as several professional poker players (including Annie Duke and Howard Lederer), will travel to Washington, D.C. to speak with members of Congress and urge them to support the rights of poker players.  E-mail and phone campaigns to Congressional offices are also in the process of being organized so that our elected officials can hear from passionate poker fans en masse.  For more information, visit http://www.nationalpokerweek.com.
