Poker News Digest 6/24/2009 – 6/26/2009

  • In a slight bit of bad news for online poker players, Congressman Barney Frank's (D – Mass.) Internet Gambling Regulation Consumer Protection & Enforcement Act, which was expected to be voted on this summer, is now being pushed back to September.  Fortunately, the reason for the delay is understandable, as the committee which Rep. Frank chairs, the House Financial Services Committee, has more pressing legislation to work on in order to try to help pull the United States out of the current economic downturn.  With those other priorities, plus the Independence Day holiday in July plus a recess in August, it only made sense to delay any hearings or votes until the fall.  Rep. Frank's bill, if made into law, would reverse the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).

  • As the date for Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association's (iMEGA) oral arguments in front of a three judge panel of the Third District Court of Appeals as to why the UIGEA is unconstitutional draws near, the judges for that panel have been named.  Hearing iMEGA's arguments on July 7th will be Judge Dolores Sloviter, Judge Thomas Ambro, and Judge Kent Jordan.  Judge Jordan would seem to be the toughest to win over, as he was appointed by President George W. Bush, who signed the UIGEA into law.  iMEGA's Executive Director, Joe Brennan, is optimistic, though, feeling that Jordan's background in corporate law may make him understanding of the burden placed on financial institutions by the UIGEA.  Judge Slotiver was appointed to the bench by President Jimmy Carter and has previously blocked the Communications Decency Act, which would have regulated pornography on the internet.  Judge Ambro was a Clinton appointee and is known for upholding First Amendment rights.

  • The World Poker Tour (WPT) released the schedule for Season VIII this week, a season which is full of familiar stops.  WPT Season VIII will commence July 13th, 2009 with the first of four stops at the Bellagio in Las Vegas with the $15,000 + $400 Bellagio Cup V.  Other Bellagio stops include Festa al Lago in October, the Doyle Bruson Five Diamond World Poker Classic in December, and the WPT Championship in April 2010.  One new location has been added – the Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, which will host the Hollywood Poker Open in March.  All told, there will be twelve stops on the Tour for the upcoming season, each of which will be filmed in high definition and broadcast on Fox Sports Net.
