Main Review:

As one of the most popular online gaming sites in Europe, Betfair Poker has a solid tradition of providing an excellent product. With Betfair Poker, the organization steps beyond its usual offerings of sports betting and casino gaming to potentially become a major player in the online poker industry. As the sponsor of the World Series of Poker Europe, Betfair is exposing its brand to many online players in an attempt to increase their share of the market.

Betfair recently became a member of the iPoker Network, which should make it even more popular in the online gaming industry. For Europeans, Betfair has become a “one stop shop” for every gaming option a player may want. Along with poker, players can take part in blackjack, sports betting, horse racing and soccer, just to name a few of the offerings. The poker option has something for even the lightest bankroll, with cash games that start at $.05/$.10, and can range up to high stakes cash games of $1000/$2000.

Unfortunately, American players cannot take part in any offering from Betfair. Legislation passed in 2006 (the UIGEA) led to Betfair closing access to the American market. In an interesting sidelight, U.S. players who access the Betfair poker site are detected and informed that they cannot place any type of bets on the site. The disclaimer does say that potential customers can, if interested in horse racing, bet on TVG.com, a member of the Betfair Group that is accessible to U.S. citizens.

Betfair - Game Types:

Betfair has probably the most extensive licensing arrangements of any poker room in the industry. Besides being licensed through the United Kingdom’s Gambling Commission, Betfair has rights to operate in Australia, Malta, Italy, Austria and Germany. With such an extensive licensing arrangement, Betfair has proven their activities are secure for their customers.

Their alliance with the iPoker Network notwithstanding, Betfair Poker has numbers that are still respectable in their own right. Cash game players average around 1200 per day and there is a wealth of tournaments in action. Betfair is also able to provide European players with satellites to the WSOP Europe, a good way for players to get into one of the most prominent tournaments in Europe.

When it comes to sponsored pros on the site, Betfair Poker does come up a bit short. In the past, Betfair has been the home of inaugural WSOP Europe champion Annette Obrestad and top online player Sorel Mizzi, but they have both since moved on to other sites. Currently their top player is Ben “milkybarkid” Grundy.

Betfair - Software and Features:

The site setup takes a “no frills” approach, with an easy to navigate lobby that presents few problems for users. The tables themselves are reminiscent of an old Bodog setup, with no avatars to distract players. All that is seen on a Betfair table is the names of the players and their chip counts; there are no chips (until a bet is made) to clutter up the screen. The card views are basic and streamlined.

Betfair Poker offers a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section, where players can usually find an answer to their queries. If this section doesn’t solve an issue, players can contact their Customer Support through e-mail and have an answer within four hours. This is something that exceeds many online poker rooms, which can take up to 48 hours to reply.

Promotional offerings at Betfair Poker offer something for every type of player. For a new signup, Betfair offers a multi-tiered bonus system that tops out at $2500. Tournaments are numerous and include action in both multi-table tournaments and sit and gos. They also offer satellite tournaments to the WSOP Europe for as little as $.50.

Betfair - Behind the Scenes:

Betfair Poker encourages the usage of parental control software to discourage underage gaming. Programs such as NetNanny or CyberPatrol are mentioned on the Betfair website. In addition to such blocking software, Betfair Poker also requires players to verify their registration information by providing copies of their ID and other documentation. This ensures that players are of age and eligible to partake of Betfair’s offerings.

What is most impressive is that Betfair Poker has an entire section of its website dedicated to “responsible gaming.” “Betfair is committed to endorsing responsible wagering as well as promoting the awareness of problem gambling,” the site states, “We believe it is our responsibility to you, our customers, to ensure that you enjoy your wagering experience on our site, while remaining fully aware of the social and financial harms associated with problem gambling.” The section is quite extensive and includes segments on how Betfair can help a customer through different software control systems before gaming becomes a problem.
