In my opinion, you should start at Pokerstars. Aside from being the biggest, and well established, a lot of other rooms have quite a bit of different sign up bonuses and promotions. Stars doesn't. So pick your gift, sign up to Pokerstars through here, and see if you like online poker. Then, if you like online poker and want to put serious time into optimizing bonus and rakeback offers, come back here and ask for the next room/offer to take.

At all sites, including pokerstars, you can play with play chips to learn the game and software before you deposit real money.

If you are an US player, then please make sure the website you play on must be non US.
My very first advice would be to play on free playing sites. Just get the feel , adapt accordingly
and learn. From my experience, Pokerstars (PS)and Fulltilt(FT) are two best online poker rooms around the world.

I recommend you not to get started in Pokerstars or Fulltiltpoker, as well they are the 2 biggest online poker sites, the place is shark infested! many wanna be pros and full time players.... i would recommend to start on other sites such as Cdpoker, UB, ,etc... secondary sites.

Good Luck

If you about to start make sure you sign up through a rakeback site. Once you open an account with a poker site they will not link you to rakeback. If you type in on google search SPAM you will be able to find your way from there. Every cent you can get for free helps.

I also heard that Pokerstars and Fulltiltpoker are good platforms to start playing poker. I also started with Pokerstars and I really like it. Maybe I will also join Fulltiltpoker.

If you are about to start playing online then you need to set your self up correctly. You definately need to set up with rakeback before you start. There is heaps of different sites you can use.

really old topic.. but anyway, in case someone still need an answer to this question...

I agree that, for beginners, it is better to start on a smaller poker room: more leveled players, less sharks and, by consequence, less stress!

Myself I started playing on 4club.com and never had a problem, the poker room is fairly new so basically no sharks to deal with and a good platform to play.

There are a lot of other small poker rooms out there though, so basically it's just a matter of choice. I'm only recommending 4club because I had a very positive experience with them.
