  • The numbers are in and for the 15th consecutive month, gaming revenue (or “win”) decreased in the state of Nevada compared to the same month in the previous year.  All told, revenues went down 11.61 percent in March to $918 million.  The famed Las Vegas Strip was close to the state average, seeing revenue dip 12.26 percent to $456 million, while Downtown Las Vegas escaped March relatively unscathed, with revenues down only 2.26%.  The big loser in Nevada was Mesquite, home to the Stateline and Eureka casinos, which had its win plummet 29.20 percent to $12 million.  Oddly, Mesquite easily outperformed the rest of the state in February, actually gaining 0.68 percent compared to February 2008.  The lone winner for March 2009 was North Las Vegas, which saw an increase in revenues of 9.73 percent to almost $32 million.

  • The worldwide economic downturn may be hurting Las Vegas, but it also might help the prospects of internet poker in the state of California.  The state is losing money quickly and in order to slow the bleeding, held a special referendum this week.  Five of the six measures to help the state’s finances were rejected.  Thus, intrastate online poker, which was introduced in the legislature by Assemblyman Lloyd Levine last year, could be seen as a way to raise money (through taxing gambling revenue) for the government.  Jim Tabilio, president of grassroots gaming advocacy group Poker Voters of America, which sponsored the bill, says that it has significant support in both the Assembly and the Senate and just needs to be tweaked a little bit.  He believes that in-state online poker rooms could start up as early as the beginning of next year.

  • The last Dream Team Poker tournament just ended less than two months ago, but that isn’t stopping the events organizers from getting another one started quickly.  The third go-around will be special as it will be held at the 2009 World Series of Poker July 12-13.  Dream Team Poker, which uses individual order of finish to determine the winning teams of three, will take place smack dab in the Amazon Room at the Rio during the fifth and sixth days of the WSOP Main Event.  Buy-in is $500 + $60 for each player ($1680 per team) and cash prizes will be awarded to the top individual finishers and the top team finishers.  Team ACED, representing ACED Poker and led by 2006 WSOP champ and former ACED pro, Jamie Gold, won March’s Dream Team Poker event and almost $60,000.
